Apple Doughnuts

I actually tried this as Christmas (yes, yes, I'm behind in posting recipes!) as I always do doughnuts and I wanted a new recipe.  I'm in charge of Christmas morning brunch.

Plus Grandma has frozen tons of her apples...so I wanted to use them!

Apple Doughnuts
Modified from Food.com
1 1/2 cup bread flour (I've found it does matter)
1 3/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup shortening
1 beaten egg
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup grated apple (mine was frozen)
1/2 cup butter, melted
cinnamon sugar
Preheat oven to 350.  In a mixing bowl, combining flour, baking powder, salt, nutmeg and sugar.  Cut in shortening.  Mix in egg, milk and apples.  Fill doughnut pan (you can also use muffin pans I guess, but I do have a doughnut pan) 2/3 full.
Bake for 20-25 minutes.
Roll in melted butter and cinnamon sugar while warm (1 tsp. cinnamon with 1/3 cup sugar).
Makes 12 doughnuts.
