Our Little Rover

Adam is turning into quite the rover at night. So I usually fish him out of the guest bed if anywhere, but Grandpa and Grandma are using it. So last night I went up to check on him after putting Andrew to bed...and he wasn't in bed (I knew he hadn't come down as I'd been there, so he was somewhere)...I check with grandparents, no Adam. We are looking...he is curled up asleep at the bottom of the linen closet!

Andrew's Baptism

Andrew was baptized this morning at Mass. Andrew as a perfect little angel - never cried at all! Adam was also excellent and did really well all through Mass. We just did the sprinkling, not immersion (he's a baby after all). Now when Adam was baptized, the priest just put a little oil on his head and it was all "contained," Father put a LOT on Andrew and then rubbed it in - we'll definitely be dry cleaning his christening gown! Andrew so didn't care though...and he still smells really good! We did wash his hair and give him a tub when we got home. His little head was glistening! He also got it all Mommy's clothes!

Trick or Treating

Adam went trick-or-treating for the first time tonight! He was a cowboy - pictures to come. He did a really good job -he said "trick or treat" and "thank you" each time [a little mumbly, but still, he tried!]. We only did about 10 houses, but that was a good introduction for him. Andrew (as Superman, Adam's costume from 2 years ago) went along, but didn't care. We had perfect weather here for trick-or-treating as it was warm enough that you didn't need a coat over your costume, as long as it wasn't a skimpy one (which obviously wasn't an issue for our little kids!).

Ravenna, as do all the areas here, schedules trick-or-treating, which I find ridiculous, so our "time" was 5-7 tonight. Whatever happened to actually going out on Halloween? I'm pretty sure I've ranted on this before, so see prior posts for continuation............

Grandparents are Exhasuting!

Notice how big he looks in there - we'll move him to the crib once my parents leave as he will be in the "guest" room.

Grandparent Fun!

Look what Grandma brought me! Adam got a puzzle, but I don't have a good picture of him with yet although he's already done it about 10 times!

Doesn't the real pants/shirts make him look so tall and big?

My parents are here!

My parents got in this morning (their plane was actually early - I was still on 480 when they called!). The boys are having a blast. Everyone but me is now asleep. And I'm off to do work.:)

AeorGarden Rant

If you remember, I got an AeroGarden awhile back. I love the concept and, when it works, it's great. BUT I've got some issues. First, their customer services is TERRIBLE. I got the wrong model orginally, they are always backordered/slow to ship, they often ship the wrong things, the list goes on. All the models had different seed "pods" orignally, now they are combining, but the last time I got them, only one "worked," because I think they sent the wrong blasted ones! The time before two didn't work as they were put in the wrong packaging. I also don't like that ONLY their stuff works in their product (which I get from their view, still annoys me). I'm just fed up with constant problems making it impossible to have two successful gardens in a row. So anyone got any ideas for using non-their products in their garden?

Extra Sour Cream?

So I had a carton of sour cream I couldn't remember buying, hence no idea how old it was. So I wanted to get it gone before it went back (I hate waste!). So I made beef stronganoff for dinner and a sour cream loaf to freeze. And now its gone and I feel better.:)

Endnotes

I LOVE how the Nook does endnotes - it makes them bearable! I hate endnotes because I want to see them and am always flipping to find them (I end up using a second bookmark). I love the link system on the Nook! Although I still prefer footnotes, these are a GOOD way to have endnotes!

Pumpkin Cookies

These were quite yummy. They are a nice, lightly spiced, holiday cookie. And you ARE eating pumpkin...that's healthy, right? :)

Pumpkin Cookies

Modified from Very Best Baking
2 1/2cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice [they did 1 tsp cinnamon and 1/2 tsp nutmeg....I just went with the basic mix as Ray really isn't a huge cinnamon fan so I'd rather have it more tempered.]
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2cups sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup pumpkin [NOT pumpkin pie mix...this is a "problem" for me as you are left with extra in the can and not quite enough for a double batch....very annoying! I had two cans, I made a double batch and froze 1 extra cup for later. I ended up with about 1/4 cup of "leftover." I think I measured exactly, I could get 1/2 cup, so then I could make pumpkin pancakes. I find it VERY annoying to waste food!]
1 large egg [I always use extra large]
1 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 350° F. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, spices and salt in medium bowl. Beat sugar and butter in large mixer bowl until well blended. Beat in pumpkin, egg and vanilla extract until smooth. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto baking sheet.

Bake for 15 to 18 minutes [mine went 19] or until edges are firm. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

They glazed theirs, I am NOT a fan of icing cookies, so I didn't. Plus I'm freezing some to go overseas and the glaze wouldn't hold up.

Makes 3 dozen (I doubled this recipe and got 5 dozen total).

Busy Productive Day

Today was a long day, but very productive. I was up late last night (grading midterm exams, which are DONE!), then up early this morning because the air duct people were scheduled between 8 AM and 10 AM, which meant I had to be dressed by 8 AM. Andrew got up at 6 AM to eat and then went back to sleep, so I got a quick nap before I had to get up and dressed. The air duct people were here shortly after 8, so its a good thing I got moving. Both boys got up then (noise, etc.), which was about normal for them. Adam was really good. He was VERY interested in what was going on, but managed NOT to be a pest about it. Andrew could have cared less. But they were done by about 9:30 and no surprise, the ducts were disgusting and all, so its a good thing we did it. The prior owner was NOT good on that type of thing.

The weather was gorgeuos here, so after that I opened all the windows in the house and we went outside. Ray came home for a few minutes because he had dropped the Vue off at the auto mechanics (something weird with our hood release, not a huge - or expensive - issue hopefully). We then came in and I started working on finishing the bedroom's "spring" cleaning and actually managed to finish it! I also got all the 12 month clothes into drawers and the 9 month out. I have to wait to get all the laundry caught up before I put away 9 month clothes (no point to have to do it twice). Adam enjoyed the vaccuuming.:)

We also went downstairs (Adam even painted me a picture!) and I got the freezer inventoried. I keep a whiteboard with the freezer inventory on it so I can tell what I have....I've been behind, so I needed to start fresh. I'd started this when I defrosted, but never got to the last one (the upstairs fridge freezer) and so had stalled.

The boys took a nap. Adam took awhile to get to sleep, I had to sit upstairs, but that worked as I was doing "real" work at the time, so I could do it on my laptop while sitting there. Then I finished that and started on the living room. Ray and I actually finished that (with help from the boys, who were up by this time) as well. I have two exterior windows to finish (it was raining by this point - we got some serious storms through here) and have to rehang curtains once they are done - working on laundry now - but otherwise I'm done with those rooms. We threw out all our old CD/cassette walkmans - we hadn't touched them in at least a year, so they are gone. I got my Halloween decoratios up on Sunday, so I'm feeling on top of things.

After dinner (leftovers, nothing special), we went downstairs for a bit (I ordered a new book - Joseph Elloit's First Family on the Nook - I've already started, fun!) then I made pumpkin cookies (Adam helped, too, Andrew supervised from his walker/bouncer (he ended up asleep in the bouncer - falling down on his job!). Adam only napped about an hour and so was very tired, which means "destructo" mode, so I was trying to keep him occupied and he loves to "cook."

So that's our day today! I'm hoping to keep the productivity up. My parents get here on Friday as Andrew's baptism is Sunday!

Little Boy in a Big Bed

Doesn't he look tiny? He's got some growing room!
My puppy Alex will keep my safe in this big bed!

12 month clothes!

Andrew, who isn't yet 6 months, just moved up to size 4 diapers (the same size Adam is wearing when he isn't in pull ups/regular undies, by the way) and 12 month clothes! He also managed to get that saw himself - rolled up to brother's toolbox and pulled it out himself!

Andrew is starting to get that walker to move a bit! We are so in trouble!

Applesauce

This was very yummy and what I did with the rest of my apples from Michigan.

Applesauce
Modified from Better Home and Gardens

3 lbs (9 medium) apples, peeled, chopped, cored
1 cup water
1/3 cup sugar [you can go up to 2/3 cup, but honestly this was sweet enough for me and I'm the "sweet" eater]
1/4 tsp cinnamon, optional [I didn't use this because Ray doesn't like cinnamon]

In a large pot, combine apples, water and sugar (cinnamon if you are using it). Bring to a boil, reduce heat. Cover; simmer for 8 to 10 minutes or until apples are tender, adding more water is necessary (I added a tiny bit).

Remove from heat and mash/beat the apples to desired consistency (I used my immersion blender). Serve warm or chilled.

Makes 4.5 cups.

Adam's Haircut

Adam got a haircut today. He didn't scream through it, so we are improving.

Before the haircut - notice the rubber boots. He insisted on wearing them - he likes them because he can put them on himself

Ready for the haircut - he's in their tractor chair just for kids and they have a VHS player set up and all.
After the haircut - all done!

My little Andrew

Andrew is a big baby, but at times you really get reminded just how little he is. Of course, he'll be my baby when he's 50 and has grandkids.:)

I think that stuffed animal is as big as he is! Adam brought it to him.

Sleeping in Mommy's bed (he was having issues going to sleep at naptime so I helped him then didn't want to move him)
My father sent me this picture in response to the picture of Andrew in my bed and my comment on how little he looked. We had just moved upstairs and I was now in my OWN room, which was very scary to me, according to my parents.

New Storage

The cubie thing is new - we just put it up for toy storage. Adam is enjoying playing in his room...the cool thing was he'd get something out and put back the old thing! He is SO my son! Now he's still 2 and can be VERY messy at times.

Walker Fun

We got the walker out today for Andrew.

Is he happy or what? You can see his feet don't quite touch yet (he can at times touch a little), but he likes the new position. Adma was showing him how to use all the toys! Andrew LOVED "playing" with his brother!

Adam then started pushing Andrew around, which Andrew thought was cool as well!

video

Adam pushing Andrew - notice the abrupt ending - I had to go tell Adam to be GENTLE...although Andrew didn't seem to care!

Then, of course, Adam had to get in - you can see his legs are WAY too long!

Confessions of a Reformed (semi) Pack Rat

Anyone who knows my mother and grandmother will vouch that I get my pack rat tendencies from them. I'm a very organized pack rat, but one nonetheless. I'm also a big believer in "using it up," and so have a hard time throwing out anything I think I'll need at "some" point as I don't want to have to repurchase it.

Having to move as much as we have I have tried to reform and be better. I was in "purging" mode today and feel quite good about myself.:) It's already in the car for Goodwill or the garbage so I will not look at it again and maybe decide to keep any of it.

I never moved growing up (my mother moved when she got married, my grandmother moved, on the same property, once since SHE got married), so never really had to "learn" to purge. It will be a very bad day if Mom or Grandma has to move. I fully expect them never to budge. We know we'll move at least once (if not more) more, so I have been trying very hard to clean out each year so it won't be so bad coming moving time - keep myself in check, per se. My worst offense is books, which will never really "fix" itself (and I'm not sure I want it to), but I do make myself clean out regularly there as well. Last time we moved (and granted we'd only been in apartments until this house), we had more, in weight, in books than furniture! I just went through my closet and got rid of a sizeable pile of clothes and I just did some cleaning in my kitchen. For the most part I use everything there, but there were some things that were in bad shape that needed to go.

I also scheduled a cleaning our air ducts as I'm trying to "clean" out before winter hits. Today was another perfect Indian summer today - another long walk! I normally "spring clean" once a year, usually in the spring, but this year, with Andrew's birth, its been piecemeal. I hope to have been through every room by Christmas. The main thing is that I get sidetracked a lot and never had any "chunks" of time to devote to it.

Pumpkin Bread

I made this today - this is really yummy!

Pumpkin Bread

Modified from Very Best Baking

2 cups flour
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 large eggs
1 can (15 oz) pumpkin [NOT pumpkin pie mix]
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar [remember you can make your own if you need to - 1 tbsp molasses plus a cup of regular sugar]
1/2 cup evaporated milk [this is about 4 oz, so one 12 oz can should make 3 loaves...I didn't get three, but I plan to simply to make it all at once next time...remember you are supposed to shake first, which I forgot this time....]
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Preheat to 350. Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Blend rest of ingredients and then add in the flour mixture until just moistened. [You can do this by hand.] Bake for 60 to 65 minutes or until it passes the toothpick test. Cool for 10 minutes and then depan and put it on the wire rack to finish cool.
